5 Best Skincare Investments You Should Make In 2020
- A Great Face Wash
- Exfoliator
- Serum
- Moisturizer
- An SPF ( Preferably SPF 40)
To have great skin you have to put in the work ( unless you are the lucky 10% of the population who has amazing skin no matter what) Lol . But I have found that the older I get the more I realize the real need for skincare.
I understand all these products are a bit of an investment BUT when you do find that perfect combination of products for your skin, it can change your life! To me, your skin should always be worth it. Our face is the first thing people see and the one thing people always remember us by. I’m sure you have heard the saying “ Oo I don’t recognize that name but if I saw their face I’m sure I would remember them.” Your skin says so much about you, It’s the way you represent yourself , It’s what people remember you by and as such it’s worth the investment – to me at least.
Wile I was in esthetics school we had so many clients come in for facials and after we would finish their facial service , the client would look in the mirror and say – “ Wow, my skin looks amazing, I’m glowing!” That was the best compliment they could have ever given to me. That means I have done my job correctly! That feeling the client has when they see their fresh skin for the first time after that facial is something they can continue to have when they get home. All they need to do is continue with those products at home! It’s difficult to put the upfront investment in but when you see real results, it’s worth every penny. It’s like your wardrobe – Think of it as your skincare wardrobe! Buy pieces one at a time until you are able to have the whole collection! Your skin will 100% thank you.
I always start people with two recommendations – a proper face wash and a moisturizer that is formulated specifically for their skin type. If purchased correctly, these two products will make a BIG difference. I’ll give you a quick example – Two years ago I was using a face wash and moisturizer that I liked quite a bit but for some reason, my skin just kept breaking out. I was confused because I was doing all the right things but nothing seemed to work. My husband and I went on a trip out west and I stopped in a couple of big stores and ended up talking to an esthetician out there. We chatted about what was going on and she recommended a Fresh face wash and gave me a few samples to take back and try. I went back to our hotel that evening and tried it that night and the night after. Just within those 2 nights my blemishes dramatically diminished! I was amazed. Was I really using the wrong face wash this whole time? I couldn’t believe it. I went out and bought the full size with the moisturizer and never looked back. It cleared up all those little pesky blemishes and I haven’t really had many since then. It’s crazy how skincare, when it’s the correct product for your skin, can change everything.
After a client has a good face wash and moisturizer in their skincare wardrobe, I recommend them next to invest in an exfoliator. There are several on the market that are great but my personal favorite still to this day is the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. This product is gentle but still gives amazing results! I always recommend when starting out you should only exfoliate 2-3 times per week. I would recommend giving yourself a day or two in between each exfoliation. You want to give your skin breaks in between to rebalance itself. An exfoliant is an amazing product in that it removes the dead surface skin cells, leaving behind bright, fresh skin. This will help when using your serums, moisturizers, and your makeup! It allows your serums and moisturizers to penetrate deeper into the skin, giving you better and faster results from the skincare products you have invested in. This will help your makeup apply so much smoother and blend out significantly better.
Lastly, I recommend a serum. This product is important but I always recommend this to be the last part of someone’s skincare wardrobe purchases because until you have the items above, this product will not do too much good at all, no matter what the bottle claims. If you don’t properly cleanse and exfoliate your skin, a serum will sit on the surface of your skin and evaporate – which we don’t want because there are so many nutrients and benefits they contain, and let’s not forget the money we spent on this!
Serums are engineered to penetrate deeper into the skin and target concerns that a moisturizer can not. They are made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper down into the skin. But If the skin isn’t cleansed properly and exfoliated, It will lay on top of the dry dead skin cells and will never be able to deliver the nutrients to the fresh skin underneath. It’s also super important to apply a moisturizer on top of the serum to lock it all in. The moisturizer acts as a weighted blanket, locking in and pushing the nutrients down further into your skin.
Oops, we can NOT forget the SPF! This is necessary at all times of the year. During the summer it is obvious, it protects us against the sun and skin damage but we are to use this even during the winter months – Dr. Hiva explains it well and puts it simply-
“ It’s really important to use a sunscreen every day, even in winter months, because ultraviolet, which is an invisible radiation, is present all year round, even in the winter months”
Also – if you are using an exfoliant, you 100% should use all the sunscreen you can because you are exposing your skin to its most vulnerable state. Because exfoliation takes the dead surface skin cells away it leaves new fresh skin cells that we do not want to damage! I can’t stress this part enough! Exfoliation must be followed by at least an SPF. Preferably the serum, moisturizer then the SPF.
Ok so I know that was a lot of information but you made it! These steps are all super important in keeping your skin looking and feeling its best.
